Child Health Day, 2008 A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America
Americans have a duty to promote the health and safety of our children. On Child Health Day, we affirm that all children are a precious gift, and we underscore our commitment to helping them realize their full potential.
Families are the foundation of our society, and parents play the vital role of providing stability, guidance, and discipline so children can lead healthy lives. Teachers, caregivers, and mentors can also help teach children about the importance of making good choices. All Americans can help our Nation's youth become healthy and responsible adults by encouraging them to avoid risky behaviors such as early sexual activity, drugs, alcohol, and violence.
My Administration remains dedicated to helping younger generations achieve their dreams by supporting programs that encourage children to maintain healthy and active lifestyles. The Helping America's Youth initiative, led by First Lady Laura Bush, is helping children make smart decisions so they can confront challenges and live longer and better lives. The Healthier US initiative encourages positive habits and addresses public health issues facing our Nation's youth, such as childhood obesity. Through the President's Challenge, we are promoting personal fitness and encouraging youth to stay active beyond the school gym. Through these and other efforts, we can make our country stronger by teaching children the importance of healthy choices.
The Congress, by a joint resolution approved May 18, 1928, as amended (36 U.S.C. 105), has called for the designation of the first Monday in October as "Child Health Day" and has requested the President to issue a proclamation in observance of this day.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Monday, October 6, 2008, as Child Health Day. I call upon families, schools, child health professionals, faith-based and community organizations,and State and local governments to reach out to our Nation's young people, encourage them to avoid dangerous behavior, and help them make the right choices to achieve their dreams.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this third day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

The more we see problems creep up with our food, such as salmonella and ecoli nationally, or with the tainted milk in China, the tighter we will see our laws regarding labeling and packaging become.

The newest law is called Country-Of-Origin- Labeling (COOL) and goes into effect October 1st. There will be some problems with the law/ multi-origin products will not be required to be labeled (example chocolate covered nuts) and neither will processed meats (Spam or chicken nuggets). We should look for some problems to be reported in the near future while things are ironed out.
"No more wondering where your hamburger came from, or where your lettuce and tomatoes were grown: Starting this week, shoppers will see lots more foods labeled with the country of origin.
Here are some common questions as shoppers navigate the change:
Q: What does the new law require?
A: That retailers notify customers of the country of origin — including the U.S. — of raw beef, veal, lamb, pork, chicken, goat, wild and farm-raised fish and shellfish, fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, peanuts, pecans, macadamia nuts and whole ginseng. (The aim was big agricultural commodities; ginseng was added for fear of imports masquerading as U.S.-grown.)
Q: Where will I see the country of origin?
A: Anywhere it fits. The rubber band around asparagus; the plastic wrap on ground beef; the little sticker that says "Gala" on an apple. If a food isn't normally sold in any packaging — such as a bin of fresh green beans or mushrooms — then the store must post a sign.
Q: Aren't many foods already labeled?
A: Some fresh produce already uses origin labeling as advertising. "Fresh from Florida" or "Jersey Grown" or "Vidalia Onion" tags don't have to be changed under the new rules; the shopper should realize they're all U.S. products.The COOL law mandating such labels first passed in 2002, but lobbying by grocery stores and large meatpackers led Congress to delay the U.S. Department of Agriculture from implementing it. Seafood labeling was phased in first, in 2005 — a key change given recurring safety problems with fish and shellfish from certain countries, including China.
Q: What's the biggest exception?
A: The labels aren't for processed foods, meaning no label if the food is cooked, or an ingredient in a bigger dish or otherwise substantially changed. So plain raw chicken must be labeled but not breaded chicken tenders. Raw pork chops are labeled, but not ham or bacon. Fresh or frozen peas get labeled, but not canned peas. Raw shelled pecans, but not a trail mix.
Q: What if the foods are merely mixed together?
A: They're exempt, too. So cantaloupe slices from Guatemala get labeled. Mix in some Florida watermelon chunks, and no label. Frozen peas, labeled. Frozen peas and carrots, no label. As for bagged salads, USDA considers iceberg and Romaine to be just lettuce, so that bag gets a label. Add some radicchio? No label.
Q: Must all stores comply?
A: No. Meat and seafood sold in butcher shops and fish markets are exempt.
Q: What if companies buy food from various places — beef from both U.S. and Mexican ranchers, for instance?
A: That's a bone of contention between large U.S. meat producers and smaller ranchers that produce exclusively U.S. animals. Tyson Fresh Meats, for instance, says it's too expensive to separate which of its cattle came from which country. So in a July letter to customers, Tyson said it would label all beef "Product of the U.S., Canada or Mexico." The National Farmers Union is protesting; USDA is considering the complaints.
Q: Aren't country labels on some processed foods?
A: Yes, tariff regulations have long required that a food put into consumer-ready packaging abroad be labeled as an import; that doesn't apply to bulk ingredients.
Q: When does the change take effect?
A: The law goes into effect Tuesday, although USDA won't begin fining laggards until spring. Violations can bring a $1,000 penalty. "

American citizens are no doubt having mixed feelings about the $700 billion Wall Street investment bailout. It’s difficult to support something that is not easy to put into perspective on many levels. Maybe this will help with one level of confusion.
Let’s put into perspective exactly how much $700 billion really can buy…

We all know by now Vermont is one of the most liberal thinking states going.
Earlier this year, we heard about towns in Vermont calling for impeachment of Bush and the arrest of Bush and Cheney if they should enter those towns. Some of the town councils were very unpopular after those ordeals.
Now the icing on the cake.
Charlotte Dennett, a candidate for Vermont Attorney General, is really losing it…or trying to lose the election.
"Dennett, 61, the Progressive Party's candidate for Vermont Attorney General, said Thursday she will prosecute President Bush for murder if she's elected Nov. 4.
Dennett, an attorney and investigative journalist, says Bush must be held accountable for the deaths of thousands of people in Iraq — U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians. She believes the Vermont attorney general would have jurisdiction to do so.
She also said she would appoint a special prosecutor and already knows who that should be: former Los Angeles prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi, the author of "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder," a new book.
"Someone has to step forward," said Dennett, flanked by Bugliosi at a news conference announcing her plan. "Someone has to say we cannot put up with this lack of accountability any more."
Dennett and two others are challenging incumbent Attorney General William Sorrell, a Democrat, in the Nov. 4 election.
Bugliosi, 74, who gained fame as the prosecutor of killer Charles Manson, said any state attorney general would have jurisdiction since Bush committed "overt acts" including the military's recruitment of soldiers in Vermont and allegedly lying about the threat posed by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in speeches that were aired in Vermont and elsewhere.
"No man, even the president of the United States, is above the law," said Bugliosi.
The White House press office didn't respond to a request for comment Thursday. But Republican National Committee spokesman Blair Latoff denounced Dennett."

Sarah Palin said she didn't blink when John McCain asked her to be his running mate.
She had an interview Thursday with ABC News' Charlie Gibson, and the 44-year-old Palin was asked if she felt ready to step in as vice president ...or even president if something happened to the 72-year-old McCain. Sarah Palin says she's ready: "You can't blink. You have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on. ... So I didn't blink then, even when asked to run as his running mate."

Patriot Day, 2008 A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America
September 11, 2001, was etched into America's memory when 19 terrorists attacked us with barbarity unequaled in our history. On Patriot Day, we cherish the memory of the thousands of innocent victims lost, extend our thoughts and prayers to their families, and honor the heroic men and women who risked and sacrificed their lives so others might survive.
Since 9/11, we have recognized the threat posed by terrorists to the safety of the American people and worked to protect our homeland by fighting terrorists abroad. We are confronting terrorism by advancing freedom, liberty, and prosperity as an alternative to the ideologies of hatred and repression. Our Nation pays tribute to our courageous men and women in uniform serving around the world and the devoted members of our law enforcement, public safety, and intelligence communities at home who work night and day to protect us from harm and preserve the freedom of this great Nation.
Seven years ago, ordinary citizens rose to the challenge, united in prayer, and responded with extraordinary acts of courage, with some giving their lives for the country they loved. On Patriot Day, we remember all those who were taken from us in an instant and seek their lasting memorial in a safer and more hopeful world. We must not allow our resolve to be weakened by the passage of time. We will meet the test that history has given us and continue to fight to rid the world of terrorism and promote liberty around the globe.
By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day."
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2008, as Patriot Day. I call upon the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half-staff on Patriot Day. I also call upon the people of the United States to observe Patriot Day with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and remembrance services, to display the flag at half-staff from their homes on that day, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent Americans and people from around the world who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eighth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

For those of you out there who aren’t fans of President Bush, I was wondering how you feel about First Lady Laura Bush?
I think she’s been a fine First Lady. One we can be proud of. Her main platform was education, along with women’s health and awareness.
She has her own web pages on the White House site. With only a few months left, if you have never given Laura Bush a thorough look, this might be a good time to do so. I especially love the photo essays. The ones with the troops are special, as are the ones with students.
She’s even got some recipes on the site. First families always have some there. Laura’s have changed over the years.
I'm going to miss Laura Bush next year.
Just think…in January we could very well have a First Gentleman on the White House website.
And now the link...

I had no idea.
I had no idea that John and Cindy McCain were so real.
They are real, down-to-earth Americans.
I’ve been watching Cindy McCain standing in the background all these months.
She’s been standing there, dressed very nicely, smiling. Looking sweet.
I’ll admit it. I’ve thought it. Just another wealthy politician’s wife.
John and Cindy McCain are pretty quiet when it comes to speaking about themselves.
I had forgotten that most people who do good are that way. Most people who do good for others, or are just good people, don’t talk about it. You see, they are too busy doing.
When I saw that video about Cindy McCain last night, the one about her life…it touched my heart.
Cindy McCain is just like so many women in America..and the world for that matter. She is caring. She cares about other human beings. Cindy McCain is like so many woman in America and the world. She is a loving mother. Cindy McCain is like some very, very courageous woman in America and the world. She has had to send a son off to war. Cindy McCain is married to John McCain, a man who also holds those same values…caring for other human beings, a loving, proud parent, a courageous man himself. Back when John and Jackie Kennedy were in the Camelot days…that wasn’t about us, the people of America. We couldn’t relate to that. We could only dream. They were that beautiful couple, practically royalty.
Now, I’m not saying Barack and Michelle Obama are like the Kennedy’s…they’re not. But they aren’t like the McCain’s either. But I can’t relate to them as regular American’s. In other words…I feel that John McCain knows more about average American people. When Fred Thompson talk’s about John McCain in the box and all the years he was there, I know John was thinking about America and what it meant to be an American. And when I saw Cindy breaking down on that video last night, or bringing that baby home to her own family, and then sending her “baby” boy off to war, it made me know she has felt the pain. They are the real deal.

National Days of Prayer and Remembrance, 2008
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America
During National Days of Prayer and Remembrance, we pay special tribute to the thousands of innocent victims who died on September 11, 2001. Our Nation honors the brave citizens, service members, police officers, and firefighters who heroically responded in the face of terror. On these important days, we reflect on the terrible events of September 11, 2001, and lift the victims and their families in our prayers.
Our Nation will never forget the individuals who lost their lives in New York, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon. America remains inspired by the countless acts of kindness and sacrifice we saw that day -- fearless rescuers who rushed toward danger, a beloved priest who died helping others, two office workers who carried a disabled person 68 floors to safety.
We also pray for the safety and success of the members of our Armed Forces now serving freedom's cause. We seek God's grace on their families, and commit to Heaven's care those brave men and women He has called home. We ask the Almighty to watch over America and pray for His providence and continued blessings on our country. May He always guide the United States of America. As we defend our country against its enemies, we pray for help in protecting the gift of freedom from those who seek to destroy it, and we ask the Almighty to strengthen all those securing liberty on distant shores.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Friday, September 5, through Sunday, September 7, 2008, as National Days of Prayer and Remembrance. I ask that the people of the United States and their places of worship mark these National Days of Prayer and Remembrance with memorial services, the ringing of bells, and evening candlelight remembrance vigils. I also invite all people across the world to share in these Days of Prayer and Remembrance.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-eighth day of August, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

Oshkosh Corp. Earns Top Employer Support AwardBy Donna Miles American Forces Press Service
|
| WASHINGTON, Aug. 29, 2008 – Oshkosh Corp. is slated to receive the Defense Department’s top award next month for supporting its employees who volunteer to serve in the National Guard and reserves.
The Oshkosh, Wis.-based company will be among 15 employers nationwide to receive the 2008 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award during a Sept. 18 ceremony here.
The Freedom Award is the highest recognition the U.S. government gives to employers for outstanding support of their employees who serve in the National Guard and reserves.
Company employees nominated Oshkosh, which designs and builds military vehicles and vehicle bodies, for the award for creating an environment they said made its employees who serve in the military feel not just accepted, but also applauded and rewarded.
Marine Corps Maj. Dion Angling, a company employee, reported that the company hosted a special going-away dinner before he deployed to Iraq in 2006, sent him care packages while he was gone, and hosted a welcoming lunch on his return. His co-workers surprised him by decorating his office for the occasion.
Army Capt. Nguyen Trinh, another company employee, praised Oshkosh for giving him the time he needed to prepare for his upcoming deployment, and keeping up its support when he was deployed.
“My company was very proactive in ensuring that I understood all the benefits I would continue to receive during my deployment, and what I could expect upon my return. The company has reached out to my wife by taking an interest in her well-being,” he said. “I am very fortunate to work for such a great organization.”
Oshkosh demonstrates its support for its citizen-soldiers in other ways, too. A “Wall of Honor” appears at each plant, displaying reserve-component members’ photos and profiles. The company contributes to deployed employees’ unit family support groups and has coordinated transportation for their Guard and reserve employees to visit their families.
The company also contributes to the Marine Corps Reserves’ Toys for Tots program, regularly attends military hiring conferences seeking current and former servicemembers for its management positions, and pays the difference between its employees’ civilian and military pay while they’re on active duty.
Robert G. Bohn, Oshkosh chairman and chief executive officer, said the company is honored to receive recognition for the support it provides its employees serving on active duty.
“Our company continued to succeed, not only because of the strength of our product and services, but also because of the integrity of our people,” he said. “We are grateful for these employees who are essential in helping Oshkosh succeed while also serving the country in a separate capacity, and to support them is the right thing to do.”
Gordon Summer, executive director of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, credits employers like Bohn with ensuring citizen-soldiers are able to carry out their important dual roles.
“In the military, the best leaders are those who always take care of their people – and it is no different in the civilian workplace,” he said. “Oshkosh Corp. has shown that it takes care of its people. Its employees who are also reserve and Guard members know the company is helping take care of their family while they are away serving this country.” |

With the Democrats gathered in Denver, there has been a call from educators to seek changes, too.
The likes of Rev. Al Sharpton (Education Equality Project), Michelle Rhee (Chancellor, D.C. Public Schools), Delia Pompa (National Council of La Raza), and John Merrow ( PSB) have some requests….
Such as accountability:
Improved accountability measures. In order to close the achievement gap, we must set high standards and demand accountability from not just teachers, but also students and parents, principals, education schools and researchers, and policymakers.
And, extended school days:
Extended school days and school years. Research has proven that more time in the classroom is essential to helping children who are falling behind to catch up and become proficient. We must make a commitment to providing extended school days and school years for students who need it and parents who choose it.
Actually their list of what they term “reforms” for the "Obama Administration" includes some good points. But much of this, such as extended school days, would cost a pretty penny.
No mention of No Child Left Behind, though....

Why?
They once thought e-voting would be the next best way to vote…then states began banning their use….California, Ohio, Florida.
Their cost? $3.5K to $5K each and that cost would like to be recovered by the local election boards from those states. Some are trying to recycle them.
Ohio is in the middle of lawsuits and may be stuck with having to use the machines this November....

The U.S. Army is in dire need of native Arabic translators and is willing to pay bonuses of $150,000 in hopes of keeping them. And it isn’t just a matter of knowing the language…it’s a matter of knowing the culture of the region. It’s a matter of knowing how the people think. That’s why just learning the language and becoming a translator won’t cut it.
"This is a war not only against the US, but against our way of freedom," says Sergeant Madi, a native interpreter and US citizen who asked to be identified only by his surname due to security concerns for him and his family. "We have been fighting for over 16 years against Islamic extremism. It is also my war."
The matter of trust comes into play here also. Can we totally trust the interpreter? The U.S. is using interpreters who have been rushed through the Green Card process....pushed through just so they can be used for this purpose. Can they be trusted? Who is the ultimate judge here?
“The Army has also been quietly growing its own capability to recruit and train Arab-Americans and others as American soldiers to do high-level work overseas. The Army now has more than 600 such linguists, known by their military job designation as "09 Limas." They come from places like Morocco, Egypt, and Sudan, but are recruited by the Army wherever there are large Arab-American populations, including Dearborn, Mich.; Miami; Dallas; Los Angeles; and Washington, D.C. The Defense Department is now authorized to put green-card holders on a fast track to US citizenship. The 09 Lima linguists are in so much demand that the Army is raising the number it will recruit next year, from 250 to 275. "
Then there are stories like this. The ultimate judge? Ask the commander… "Yet when it comes to linguistic and cultural expertise, few can compare to a native speaker, defense officials say. "They hear things that are said around them, they are able to see things that others can't see," says Mr. Smith. Smith tells the story of a commander in Iraq who was using a civilian interpreter, or "terp" in the vernacular of the military, employed by a private contractor, as the American commander spoke to a local Iraqi. During the meeting, the civilian interpreted literally the words of the local Iraqi, who had told other Iraqis to feed the American commander parsley. But an 09 Lima standing nearby heard something different: feeding parsley to someone was a reference to an old expression in which parsley was fed to a bird to choke it to death. "He was pretty much giving an order to have the commander killed," says Smith. "Right there, a life was saved .... You can see just by knowing a bit of slang, being a native speaker, it can make a difference."

In California....
That nasty cancer-causing chemical acrylamide will be no more in potato chips. No longer in fries and tater tots, either. And companies will pay, including Heinz and Frito-Lay.
"Acrylamide is produced when potatoes and other starchy foods are cooked at high temperatures. It is used industrially for treating sewage, and its presence in food was unknown in 1990 when California listed the chemical as a cancer-causing substance under Proposition 65. That initiative, passed in 1986, requires companies to post warnings of exposure to substances that cause cancer or birth defects.Swedish scientists were the first to detect acrylamide in food in a 2002 study. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is studying the chemical but has not imposed nationwide restrictions. The FDA has advised consumers that they can reduce the levels of acrylamide in fried potatoes by not over-browning them while cooking.
The settlement requires the potato chip producers to reduce acrylamide to 275 parts per billion in three years, a low enough level to avoid a Prop. 65 warning label. That amounts to a 20 percent reduction for Frito-Lay and an 87 percent reduction for Kettle Chips, Brown's office said. Little or no reduction will be needed for most Cape Cod chips, but one product, Cape Cod Robust Russets, will require a warning label, the attorney general said."
So why aren't there nationwide restrictions?

Barackbook.com is a mock-up of a Facebook profile with a picture of a frowning Obama in the corner of the page looking like an angry schoolboy. His status is set to: "Barack is hoping to settle on an Iraq policy before November."
The Fake Obama's FriendFeed is peopled by a string of colorful figures that the RNC has already trotted out to present the candidate as a man with questionable connections. They include Marilyn Katz, William Ayers and Antoin "Tony" Rezko. Each "friend" is linked to their own mock-Facebook profile with newspaper headlines and video excerpts documenting their checkered pasts.
~~~~~~~~~~
I'm sure Barack Obama is thinking, with friends like these, who needs enemies when he looks at his friends on his pages.
This sure is a popular place for a candidate like Obama. But it continues to make me think...will all of these wide-eyed wonders go out and vote in November? If the ballot was on Facebook...No problem. But they've got to go to a polling place and stand in line to make their "change."
Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, says aliens have been visiting the earth for the past sixty years.
Read the short article at Reuters HERE
The aliens have landed.
Thus declared Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell on Saturday to more than 200 admirers.
"A few insiders know the truth . . . and are studying the bodies that have been discovered," said Mitchell, who was the sixth man to walk on the moon.
[...]
Besides aliens, Mitchell talked about being freed of prostate cancer during a healing ceremony and his epiphany while returning from the moon.
From an interview Mitchell had with the St. Petersburg times in 2004...
There was a time when American astronauts were thought to be heroes. Can you imagine, back in the sixties, what it must have felt like to be the ultimate adventurer? Then you are just tossed aside and forgotten. Is this just a way to gain attention? Edgar Mitchell has quite an interesting life. Frankly, I believe that if Dr. Mitchell were going to be an astronaut today, he would not pass the testing beforehand...if you know what I mean.
 Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
Holy Cow!
I don't know who will pay the price if this happens...
The Governor? Only those stalling on the budget? All of them?
Because all state employees will suffer from the pay cuts...and they won't forget at election time.
"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is considering an order that would slash the paychecks of hundreds of thousands of state workers to the federal minimum wage until the state budget impasse is resolved.
The workers would be entitled to recover the difference between their salaries and the minimum wage - $6.55 an hour - once the state enacts a budget and appropriates the money, under an executive order that the governor's office has drafted and that he is considering signing next week.
But the delay would help the state through an immediate cash crunch, as well as add pressure to legislators who failed to resolve their differences and pass a budget, as required, by the July 1 start of the fiscal year.
[...]
"We are not pawns. We are living breathing human being with mortgages, kids in school and car payments," said Jim Zamora, a spokesman for Service Employees International Union, Local 1000, which represents 95,000 state workers. "They're playing this multibillion-dollar game of chicken, but they're taking it out on us."
I'd say that will be one way to get the ball rolling on the budget process... Read the full article HERE
