Yes...It Is Legal...

Some members of the Village Board are reported to be using the 'tactic' of claiming miles from work to the Village Hall even though that is a trip that they'd have made on the way home.  It is probably fine so far as the IRS is concerned.  It has been done in many different settings over the course of time.  If there is a specific reason/need for the stop at the Village Hall, then that is fine.  If this is simply a convenient way to gain a deduction while satisfying the recently enacted requirements of expense accounts, it troubles me.

The trouble with these kinds of things is that, even though not illegal, some might take away the wrong impression from this knowledge.  These kinds of things can too often cloud the minds of people.  These things can cause people to 'see' things that may not be there.  These are the things that help to create or feed the 'us versus them' issues.  These are the things that not all would be comfortable in doing.

Once in public office, one lives in a fish bowl, rightly or wrongly.  Maybe my naiveté is showing yet again.

My personal approach is to lean almost too far in the opposite direction in such situations, so, for me, I wish it wasn't so.

This revelation is a little disconcerting.  I find it troubling.  I wonder what is next.

Wow a story about absolutely nothing but following the law. The IRS code stinks. In following IRS rules I would have to commute to work in different locations throughout the Milwaukee Metro area. NOT Deductable by IRS rules. Instead of making issue with our elected officials following the law make issue with the law and change it. While your at it get me reimbursed for all the years I was not allowed to take the deduction for first trip from my home to my employment.

POMO17, what kind of comment would you expect from me? I didn't instigate the story, I was asked for an opinion so I gave one. As President during the last 8 years of the "Sewer Wars", between MMSD and contract communities, of which Germantown was one, I went to many meetings during the day, either in Brookfield or Milwaukee, sometimes even in Madison twice. I would average using 4-5 personal vacation days from my regular job per year, plus pay for my own gas, driving my own car. Reimbursement? Only for gas to the Madison meetings and for gas only, figured out by the finance department.I never asked the Village for perks, never expected them and never got them. If you looked at the chart in the news article, Germantown is the only one that allows the expense allotment to not be considered taxable income. That at least should be changed if the law isn't.
