Political Undercurrent Is Strong...

By Al Campbell
Sunday, Mar 30 2008, 08:15 AM

I must confess something here and now:  I never would've believed I could be so naive as to think that politics in Germantown was different than politics everywhere else.  How wrong it appears that I was.

Earlier this year I heard rumors of a recall plan that would see Charlie Hargan again running for the President's seat that he lost to Tom Kempinski.  I pooh-poohed that since it sounded like the fairly typical sour grapes after a significant election change.  Now I read comments to my last Blog that use the "sour grapes" term, and I see Charlie Hargan responding that "what goes around comes around".  Charlie does not appear to be as mild-mannered as I thought.

I wrote of the postcard I received, and yesterday I received a telephone 'robo-call' telling me very much the same thing the postcard told me.  This takes a lot more money than simply having some brochures printed and folded, and having some signs made that can be stuck in the ground.  We're talking some 'serious' money for a village the size of Germantown with its former reputation as the quiet little community just north of Menomonee Falls.

And then, a look at the Campaign Finance Reports for the Committee to Elect Peter Sorce began to shed more light.  The Treasurer of that Committee is Charlie Hargan.  The reports he prepared and signed show campaign contributions totaling over $2,500 through March 27th.  And, it shows the sources of those contributions.  It shows what some of the other commenters wrote after my last Blog.  There are people associated in one way or another with the Asset Development organization.  That is, of course, the organization that prevailed 5-4 in its effort to have the Village of Germantown use its borrowing abilities to secure favorable rates on some $2.6 million of bond money.  There are law firms and individuals with some from the following locations: Rosenberg, WI; Milwaukee, WI; Delafield, WI; Mequon, WI; Franklin, WI; West Bend, WI; Waukesha, WI; Nashotah, WI.

It is difficult to comprehend that someone from Rosenberg would make contributions to a trustee running for re-election in Germantown without some reason.  The same, in my opinion, goes for the rest of the folks with the exception of one or two who have business interests in our community.

What goes around comes around.  This smacks of the kind of politics I thought would bypass Germantown for a long time to come.  That shows my naiveté', I guess.

Will this spur more good citizens to run for various community seats or will it have a chilling effect?  I suspect it will have a chilling effect to the detriment of our community.

Will this kind of thing escalate election after election as it seems to elsewhere?  I suspect the answer is yes, it will...again to the detriment of our community.

By the way, if I have any of my suppositions incorrect as I was accused of following my last Blog, I certainly welcome the facts that will correct my erroneous supposition(s).

Al, the only fact that you were incorrect on about your card story was that it spoke against Dean Wolters. It didn't mention him in any way, did not even promote Anita Hilleman for Trustee, just as a person doing positive things for & in the Village.

What I meant by my comment, "What goes around, comes around", was that I was totally caught by surprise last year by big money in the campaign, as I am this year. Last year it was against me, this year it is supporting others that I happen to support. The funny thing is, some of it is coming from the same people. Why? I don't know.

By the way, you can continue to "pooh, Pooh" the idea of me running for Pres., either as a re-call candidate or any time in the future. I had my run as an elected official, did my best and am proud of it. I hope this campaign stuff does not stop people who sincerely have the betterment of Germantown as their main goal from running. Common sense and logic, that's all that's needed.

Disgusted in Gtown

Al, you DID get your facts correct.  Talk to people in District 4 - some received the card yesterday.  I rec'd one and I am disgusted.  It is blatant smear propaganda.  As the saying goes - Sorry, Charlie.  Maybe you should get your facts in order but something tells me you already know all about the cards and phone calls.  It's been over a year already, perhaps it is time to move on and heal - none of this is healthy for Germantown!

Disgusted In Germantown got a second card which I heard about yesterday but have not seen. The one Al wrote about was the first card that came out Thursday, saying nothing about Dean. When you say' "Something tells you", that's when imagination replaces fact. By the way, I've moved on very well, thank you. I continue to be involved in positive things in Germantown.

Good citizens have been spurred to get involved in the election process, their names are Baum, Wederman, Wolter, and Ewert. I am no longer surprised that the same candidates that are supported by special interest groups, Steitz, Sorce, Hilleman, and Sherman, are also suppported by Charlie.

And now I learn that the Asset Management developer tie to all of this special interest money goes right through Charlie Hargan's front door as Peter Sorce's treasurer.  I had suspected that there was someone working from Germantown in conjunction with Asset Management on the smear campaigns, I just never thought it would have been our past President. This is sad times for Germantown.

You give me more credit for being devious than I deserve. It's insulting that you think I would do something like that. Also, no money that came through me went anywhere than to pay for Trustee Sorce's actual election expences. Put your name to your comment.

Unfortunately, your name is now associated with this debacle Mr. Hargan - like it or not.  I fear your once good reputation is forever tarnished.  People are disgusted.....inquire outside your immediate circle for an unbiased account.

Politics in the village seem to be going from bad to worse.Asset management seems to be behind much of the support of a few lucky trustees.Actually luck has nothing to do with it. Support for the sewer extension to the trailer park seems to be the common denominator in this support. The Village Board voted 5 to 4 to put tax payers at risk for the financing of the sewer cost. Did anyone of those supporting the bond issue bother to research the ability of the project to actually pay the village for the debt service on these bonds? Of course not.Did anyone of the supporters of the villages commitment to fund this project look into the financials of Asset Management? Of course not.Where is the due diligence? Where is the fiduciary resonability required of every member of the board? Ask yourself why Asset Management is supporting these trustees? The answer is obvious.

Patti, my name is connected to this debacle only because you and your friends have chosen to do so. I am proud to have my name associated with the four people that I am supporting for the Village Board. There is no reason for them or me to be blamed for something a committee, either in or out of Germantown, did that we had no idea about. My good reputation, as you called it, is still intact. It takes more than false information to change that, just as I hope any false information on those cards do not make a difference in the election. It should be based on the individuals themselves. I haven't read any except the one I received at my home about Pete, which was correct. The others were negative and from what I've heard, not very accurate. Take it out on whoever sent them, not people who had no idea they were coming or who sent them.

What is the problem

As a youth in Germantown, I look at the messages back and forth and realize that when my parents said "What goes around comes around!!!" is true!!!

Dirty politics have existed in Germantown for years, and just because someone decided to do something, that you all are shocked about, doesn't make it wrong!!! Not once does anyone state that what is being said is wrong - you're just upset it was finally put into print and on phone calls!!!

G-town District 4 Resident (I apologize - Wolter Residence - since the address attached is yours) - what makes the smearing wrong, when you have come out on this blog and smeared others!!!

I wish last year Tom Kempinski's finances would have been brought through the mud, like Peter Sorce's have - $2500 is nothing compared to what Tom used to win his election!!!

I help out in Germantown a lot, and still do not know who Art Zabel, Tom Kempinski, Jim Baum, Jeff Werderman, Mike Beck, and Dean Wolter are.  I don't see them helping in my community (Germantown).  I have worked side by side with people like Clark Sherman, Mel Ewert, Bill Steitz, Al Vanderheiden, Dave Schornack, Charlie Hargan and Anita Hilleman.  I know that if I have a question or concern, I can talk to them and look to them to work on that issue.  When I speak to Bill Steitz, Clark Sherman, Al Vanderheiden, Peter Sorce, Anita Hilleman, and Charlie Hargan they work on the positives, not on the negatives!!!

The comment was made about good citizens and you only named a few - All of Germantown are Good Citizens, including all candidates!!!  It saddens me to see someone complain about wrongs being done to them, and then that same household smear others - you have lowered to a level that a youth in Germantown hates and is embarassed to live here!!!

Blaming Charlie Hargan - wow, I have worked with Charlie on many things, and even though he is not President, he continues to be a rock in Germantown.  He continues to give of himself and show his love for Germantown.  Charlie is the treasurer for a candidate, and if anyone thinks that $2500 would support the campaign of postcards and "robo-calls", then they need some financial help!!!  Charlie continue to be the wonderful man that you are, and I appreciate that you are a big part of Germantown and that you are one of my mentors!!!

Shame on you people!!!

Respect adults - then act like it!!!
